Today is the day that I get my Mount Kinabalu Certificate and I gave a talk;"Good Morning Principal,Mr Razali, teachers and fellow friend.I would like to share my experience in the Giant In Me Programme.
Teamwork,Respect,Discipline,Responsibility and Confidence are values the Giant programme had instilled in me.
I remember our first outdoor activity to the Snow City.I thought the objective was merely to have fun but during the debriefing,I realized that there was more to just having fun.I got to know my friends better,we built rapport and I could feel the team spirit within the 16 of us.
I must admit that the programme was not easy.Snow city was just a starter. After the 1st week,we had numerous trainings and they were tough mentally and physically. We had to run in twos and nobody was allowed to talk during the run.We had to face the consequences if we break any of the rules during the training.Despite the toughness,we managed to work as a team and pulled through all obstacles. The tough trainings have taught me self-discipline,respect,perseverance and a 'never-say-die' attitude. The training had also prepared me for the Mount Kinabalu expedition on 30 May 2009.
Apart from the training and outdoor activities,we underwent a life skill programme in DJ spin master.I had no confidence to spin the record initially but through several sessions,I started to gain confidence. The greatest challenge was to face the crowd in the canteen during the DJ Spin Master competition.I was scared and nervous. However,I managed to overcome my fear and spinned my way through.
The Giant programme not only improved my character,it helped me to realise the importance of doing well academically.I studies hard and was glad to see improvements in my semester 1 academic results.
On 30 May 2009,the day finally came for us to embark on an expedition to Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in South East Asia.I remember my first expression when I first saw Mount K,my "jaw dropped".I couldn't believe what I saw and I thought to myself that I won't be able to make it up.Before seeing the actual size of the mountain,I could only imagine that it is probably 2 to 3 times higher than Bukit Timah Hill.I was very wrong,it is about 30 times higher.I know I had to climb the mountain because the only lodging for the night was up there.I forced myself to think that I can make it and I eventually did.The climb continued the next day, which was even more challenging. We woke up at 1.30am and started climbing to the summit at 2.30am.I wasn't mentally prepared as I was extremely exhausted. In addition to the exhaustion was the strong wind and freezing temperature that went below 5 degree celsius.Fortunately,Mr Ben and Lin 'LouSi' motivated me by encouraging me to keep going and not to give up.I managed to climb until 3668m,which is 427m below the summit, before starting my decend.
The Mount Kinabalu expedition is really a test of my mental ability.I didn't believe that I could climb the tallest Mountain in South East Asia and that to me,was my greatest achievement in life,so far.
In conclusion,I definitely did not regret participating in the programme. My learning journey in the Giant programme has developed me into a stronger person as a whole. The programme had indeed increased my level of confidence and self-esteem.I now belief that if I work hard, nothing can stop me from achieving sucess in my life. With that,I thank you."
